A More Efficient Approach to Large Scale Matrix Completion Problems
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates a scalable optimization procedure to the low-rank matrix completion problem posed by Candes and Recht [2]. We identify the singular value decomposition as a computational bottleneck for large problem instances, and propose utilizing an approximately computed SVD borne out of recent advances in random linear algebra. We then use this approximately computed SVD to implement some popular first order methods for solving the matrix completion problem. Our results indicate that these modified routines can easily handle very large data sets. In particular, we are able to recover 35 million entries from a 10 × 10 matrix in a matter of minutes.

There are many numerous methods for solving large-scale problems in which some of them are very flexible and efficient in both linear and non-linear cases. League championship algorithm is such algorithm which may be used in the mentioned problems. In the current paper, a new play-off approach will be adapted on league championship algorithm for solving large-scale problems. The proposed algori...
متن کاملHeuristic approach to solve hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines
In hybrid flow shop scheduling problem (HFS) with unrelated parallel machines, a set of n jobs are processed on k machines. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the HFS scheduling problems with unrelated parallel machines has been proposed to minimize the maximum completion time (makespan). Since the problem is shown to be NP-complete, it is necessary to use heuristic methods to ...
متن کاملAn efficient approach for solving layout problems
This paper offers an approach that could be useful for diverse types of layout problems or even area allocation problems. By this approach there is no need to large number of discrete variables and only by few continues variables large-scale layout problems could be solved in polynomial time. This is resulted from dividing area into discrete and continuous dimensions. Also defining decision var...
متن کاملA Tabu Search Method for a New Bi-Objective Open Shop Scheduling Problem by a Fuzzy Multi-Objective Decision Making Approach (RESEARCH NOTE)
This paper proposes a novel, bi-objective mixed-integer mathematical programming for an open shop scheduling problem (OSSP) that minimizes the mean tardiness and the mean completion time. To obtain the efficient (Pareto-optimal) solutions, a fuzzy multi-objective decision making (fuzzy MODM) approach is applied. By the use of this approach, the related auxiliary single objective formulation can...
متن کاملParallel stochastic gradient algorithms for large-scale matrix completion
This paper develops Jellyfish, an algorithm for solving data-processing problems with matrix-valued decision variables regularized to have low rank. Particular examples of problems solvable by Jellyfish include matrix completion problems and least-squares problems regularized by the nuclear norm or γ2-norm. Jellyfish implements a projected incremental gradient method with a biased, random order...
